Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease; gum disease is defined by the inflammation of the tissues which surrounds and supports the teeth. Also known as Periodontitus or Gingivitis, this leads to the progressive loss of bone structure, loosening, and the eventual loss of the affected teeth.

This disease is caused by bacteria, our mouths are full of bacteria, mucus, plaque and other food particles that can get stuck between and on the teeth. If the plaque hardens, microorganisms may form and only the doctor can remove the hardened plaque which is called tartar.

Treatment of Periodontal disease is simple; first there needs to be a diagnosis of the disease to see how severe the disease has become. Treatment can range from a few simple procedures to oral surgery and once the disease is controlled a schedule is developed in which includes simple home care instructions with dental office cleanings every three to four months.

To prevent from ever having to worry about periodontal disease; brush your teeth twice a day, floss regularly and visit the dentist on a regular basis.
